[NEWS] Lagos State government issues 20-day ultimatum for markets clean up or risk closure

The Governor of Lagos State, Akinwunmi Ambode has expressed displeasure with the present state of various markets across the State, saying that leaders of the various markets must prevail on their members to clean up their dirty surroundings within the next 20 days or risk closure of their markets.
The directive was issued in Alausa during a stakeholders forum with market leaders in the 57 local governments and local council development areas of the State.

Governor Ambode, who was represented at the event by Commissioner for the Ministry of Local Government and Community Affairs, Mr. Muslim Folami said the present administration abhors the dumping of refuse on roadsides, medians, bus stops as well as markets, urging market leaders to promptly rid their environment of waste.

He said dumping of refuse within the market environment poses health hazards, discourages customers and residents from patronising stalls within the markets, thereby reducing economic activity within the market environment.“You have 20 days to clear the refuse in your markets.

The State Government would not hesitate to shut down any market that is dirty because we will not be happy to see any market within our metropolis dirty”he stated.Ambode emphasised that the State Government’s resolve to ensure a cleaner and healthier Lagos informed the Cleaner Lagos Initiative and the recruitment of street sweepers across the State. He urged the market leaders to prioritize the cleanliness of their markets and cooperate with Visions cape officials by ensuring prompt and proper packaging of their waste for easy disposal.

He admonished the market leaders to ensure their members desist from street trading and urged all traders to get shops within the markets so as to ease the flow of traffic and prevent road accidents.

The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Local Government and Community Affairs, Mr. Fola Padonu solicited the support of market leaders to justify the huge resources already committed to the Cleaner Lagos Initiative by the Lagos State Government.“All markets must be kept clean, the State Government has spent so much on various projects and we want you all to be partakers of these benefits. Work with us to ensure Lagos is cleaner.”the Permanent Secretary said.

Cameroon Anglophone Separatist Leader, 46 Others Extradited From Nigeria

The president of the anglophone separatist movement in Cameroon, Sisiku Ayuk Tabe, was extradited to Yaounde on Monday after being detained in Nigeria, the government said.

Ayuk Tabe, who had been held in Abuja since January 5, was sent to Cameroon with 46 of his supporters, Cameroonian government spokesman Issa Tchiroma Bakary said in a statement."A group of 47 terrorists, which includes Mr Ayuk Tabe, has been in the hands of the Cameroonian justice system for a few hours," Tchiroma said.

"They will answer for their crimes" before the Cameroonian courts, he added, underlining the "determination" of Nigeria and Cameroon "never to tolerate that their territories serve as a base for destabilising activities directed against one or the other".Prior to their extradition, Ayuk Tabe and nine others had been "held in secret" at a hotel in Abuja, according to their lawyer and Amnesty International.

It was not possible on Monday to establish when the other separatists extradited from Nigeria to Cameroon were arrested.In mid-January, Amnesty International expressed concern about the separatists detained in Nigeria, saying they "could be threatened with torture and (given) an unfair trial" if they are extradited from Nigeria.

Over the past year, there has been mounting tension in Cameroon's Southwest and Northwest regions -- home to anglophones who account for about a fifth of the West African nation's population of 23 million.English-speakers complain they have suffered decades of economic inequality and social injustice at the hands of the French-speaking majority.Ayuk Tabe is campaigning for the two English-speaking regions of Cameroon to separate from the French-speaking part of the country.
On October 1 last year, the breakaway anglophone movement issued a symbolic declaration of independence for"Ambazonia", claiming autonomy over English-speaking regions.

Cameroon's President Paul Biya fiercely opposes secession and has met the agitation with a crackdown, including curfews, raids and restrictions on travel.

The country is preparing for general elections -- including the presidential vote -- at the end of 2018.But observers say the ballot could be disrupted by the deep socio-political crisis in the English-speaking regions.

Jamaican athlete Usain Bolt,teamed up with South African side Mamelodi Sundown sat their training facility today as the 31-year-old eight-time Olympic gold medalist is visiting the country as part of an Athletics South Africa development scheme. 

The 2016 African champions announced Bolt's arrival on their Twitter account and also posted a video of the Jamaican in training with the squad. 

Bolt, who retired from athletics after August's world championships in London, is famously a Manchester United fan and has often spoken of his desire to play football. "Good thing is he's a free agent! And he can play in a few positions," Sundowns manager Pitso Mosiname, cheekily said. Bolt admits the transition from athletics to football is tough, but thanked the club for the opportunity to train with the squad."It was a good game, a fun day and I really enjoyed it.

NBC bans Olamide’s latest hit single - Science Students

Though Olamide has explained severally that his latest smash hit song"Science Students" is aimed at fighting drug abuse, the Nigerian Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) has slammed a Not-To-Be-Broadcast (NTTB) warning on the song.

The warning was served to all radio and television stations last week. Confirming the news, NBC’s Head of Public Affairs Hajia Maimuna Jihada told Tribune that the song was not out-rightly banned but prohibited from being played on local stations for public consumption.

She said: NBC does not ban music. Our mandate is on what goes on Radio and TV. Olamide’s Science Student has been declared ‘Unfit for broadcast’. 

She further went on to mention that the song’s subtle promotion of illegal drugs was the main reason for declaring it unlawful as she issued a stern warning to all broadcasting houses;  We have communicated all our licensees for compliance or they will face sanctions

With Meghan Markle and Princess Eugenie getting engaged within two months of each other, people have been comparing the values of their engagement rings and this has led to people wondering who among the British royals owns the most expensive engagement ring.

With regards to that, Queen Elizabeth II, Princess Diana, Meghan Markle, Kate Middleton and Princess Eugenie's engagement rings were compared in value. Check out whose royal engagement ring is the priciest, according to Metro.

Queen Elizabeth II The queen's engagement ring is personally designed by Prince Philip with the help of jeweler Philip Antrobus Ltd. The band features a 3 carat"old cut" diamond set in a claw setting in platinum.

The diamond was taken from atiara that belongs to Prince Philip's mother, Princess Alice of Greece. The ring is estimated to cost $284,168.

Princess Diana and Kate Middleton Prince Charles gave Princess Diana a sapphire engagement ring from Garrard & Co Ltd. It was not custom-made like the other royal rings. It features 14solitaire diamonds surrounded by Sri Lankan 12-carat oval faceted blue Ceylon sapphire and was set in 18-carat white gold.

Later on, Prince William used the same ring when he proposed to Middleton. In 1981, the ring was valued at$39,784.

But at the time it is estimated to have an insurance value of $426,252.

Meghan Markle There are different opinions when it comes to the value of the "Suits" star's engagement ring. According to Deborah Papas, a gemologist from Prestige Pawnbrokers, it has an estimated value of $70,000.

However, another gem expert claimed that Prince Harry's engagement ring to Markle is worth $174, 218."From seeing the pictures, I would estimate that the centre diamond is a slightly elongated cushion cut diamond, approximately 3.00 -4.00 carats.

The side diamonds are more than likely oval or round cut diamonds about 0.75 carats each," the expert explained. "We would estimate that the value of the centre stone would be around £70,000 - £115,000 ($99,553 -$163,552), while the side stones would have an intrinsic value of around £3,750 ($5,333) each."Princess Eugenie meanwhile, Papas claimed that Princess Eugenie's engagement ring is estimated to cost over $140,000.

The pink padparadscha sapphire ring surrounded by diamonds includes "the rarest and most valuable of all the corundum varieties."Initially, Papas said that Princess Eugenie's ring is twice the cost of Markle's band, which is priced at$70,000.

But another expert said that Markle's ring is worth over $170,000. If the second gemologist is correct, then the"Horrible Bosses" star's ring is more expensive.

However, neither Markle nor Princess Eugenie owns the most expensive ring. That one belongs to Princess Diana and Middleton, who share the same band.

Kylie Jenner Is Building A MEGA Mansion In LA

She was spotted walking around a construction site with mum Kris and best friend Jordyn on Wednesday.

But Kylie Jenner, 20, wasn't using the rubble-filled site as a good place to stretch her legs - instead she was reportedly overseeing her new property being built in the Hidden Hills of Los Angeles, a gated community where she already owns a home. 

According to TMZ, the expectant mum is set to house her first child in a decadent mansion, with building permits suggesting the value of the job to be over$2.37m (£1.91m).

The site obtained the building permits to the impeding property issued in December, which reportedly boasts a 9,187 sq. ft. first floor and 5,304 sq. ft. second floor, with two massive garages attached.

The permits also suggest there will be a 1,836 sq. ft. of covered porches as well as a cabana for the pool. Older permits for a retaining wall and foundation were also cited, with adjustments to the building likely to cause the $2.37m cost to rise.

Kylie previously owned a $1.7m (£1.20m) decadent mansion in the exclusive Californian area, which other stars, such as Miley Cyrus and Drake call home.

Lekki & Ikoyi Toll Fares To Be Increased By February - LCC

The Lekki Concession Company Limited has announced that it will increase the tolltariffs being charged at the Admiralty Circle Toll Plaza on the Lekki-Epe Expressway and the Lekki-Ikoyi Link Bridge Toll Plaza with effect from Thursday, February 1, 2018.

The LCC said in a statement on Friday thatthe upward review of the tolls followed “extensive consultations held with stakeholders in the Eti-Osa/Lekki-Epe Expressway of Lagos State.

Although details of the new rate were not disclosed in the statement, the firm said N100 would be paid by any driver of a minicomputer bus using the Lekki-Epe toll plaza, which is an increase of N20 on the N80 currently being charged. This, it noted, was the agreement it reached with the drivers’ union during the consultations.

[NEWS] 57-Year Old Woman Allegedly StabsPolice Officer With Broken Bottle

A 57 -year-old woman, Elizabeth Oyindo, who allegedly stabbed a police officer witha broken bottle was on Friday arraigned before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.

Oyindo, who resides at Ijaiye Ojokoro was arraigned on a three-count charge of conspiracy, breach of peace and assault.

The prosecutor, Sgt. Mr. Godwin Awase, had told the court that the suspect committed the offences on Jan.17 at her residence.He said that the accused and others, still at large, conspired to assault a police officer, Francis Azuruna, with a broken bottle.“The accused stabbed the complainant with a bottle while performing his lawful duty,” the prosecutor said.

Awase said the complainant was sent to the house of the accused to restore peace between her and some staff of electricity company when he was assaulted.“The Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company(IKEDC) wanted to disconnect electricity supply to the apartment of the accused for owing.“The accused invited some hoodlums who came to remove and seize the ladder which Mr Yusuf Oloyede, a staffer of IKEDC, used to climb up while he was still on top of the poll.

“Another staff of IKEDC called the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Ojokoro Station who sent the complainant to the scene.“On getting there, the accused and others attacked him. The accused was dragging his riffle and in the process stabbed him with a broken bottle on his right hand.

“The accused was later arrested, while others escaped,” the prosecutor said. He said that the offences contravened Sections 168, 174 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015, as revised.

The accused however pleaded not guilty to the charges. The Magistrate, Mr J. A. Adigun, granted the accused bail in the sum of N100,000 with two sureties in like sum. Adigun said that the sureties should be gainfully employed and show evidence of two years tax payment to the Lagos State Government. The case was adjourned until Feb. 23 for mention.

- The federal government has responded to the scathing criticisms launched by ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo on the Muhammadu

- Buhari administration- While describing the ex-president as apatriot, the minister of information stated that the Buhari govt has made key accomplishments in the area of revamping the economy, and not just fighting corruption and tackling the insurgency

- The minister went ahead to outline these key accomplishments, which he described as ‘phenomenal’, including in the area of agriculture and infrastructural development The Muhammadu Buhari-led federal government has issued a formal response to the attack on the president by ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo, NAN reports.

The federal government gave its response on Wednesday, January 24, via the minister of information, Alhaji Lai Mohammed...

According to Mohammaed, the Buhari administration had received Obasanjo’s message in good faith.

We appreciate what he said concerning the administration’s performance in two out of the three key issues that formed the plank of its campaign: Fighting corruption and tackling insurgency.

“Specifically, the former president said President Buhari must be given credit for his achievement so far in these two areas. We thank him for this.“Apparently, the former president believes that the administration does not deserve a pass mark in the area of the economy, which is the third of our three-pronged campaign promises.“We have no doubt that in the face of massive challenges in this area, this administration has availed itself creditably.

“We believe that Chief Obasanjo, because of his very busy schedule, may not have been fully availed of developments in the government’s efforts to revamp the economy, which was battered by the consequences of over-dependence on a commodity as well as unprecedented pillaging of the treasury.

“Today, most of the indices by which an economy is measured are looking up. Permit me to say, however, that Nigeria would not have exited recession through a mere order or if the administration had not made use of good Nigerians who could help.“This Administration is making steady progress in its determined effort to revamp the economy, and the results are showing:

* Foreign Reserves have peaked at$40b, the highest level in about four years, and up from $24 billion just a year ago, even though when we came in, the price of oil had crashed woefully.

* According to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBC), headline inflation has fallen for 11 consecutive months, standing at 15.37% as at December 2017. This is the lowest inflation rate since Jan 2017, and it has met and surpassed the target set for inflation in the administration’s Economic Recovery and Growth Plan (ERGP).

* Our determined implementation of the Treasury Single Account (TSA) has stopped the hemorrhaging of the treasury. Some 108 billion Naira has been saved from removal of maintenance fees payable to banks, pre-TSA. The nation is being saved 24.7billion Naira monthly with the full implementation of the TSA.

* The elimination of ghost workers has saved the nation 120 billion Naira

* At about 1.8 billion dollars, the capital inflows in the second quarter of 2017 were almost double the $908 million in the first quarter.

* In the wake of a stable Naira and increased investment inflows, Nigeria’s stock market emerged one of the best-performing in the world, delivering returns in excess of 40 percent.

* Nigeria rose 24 places on the World Bank’s Ease of Doing Business ranking, and earned a place on the List of Top 10Reformers in the world.

* According to Q3 2017 figures, agriculture export is up year-on-year by 25%, solid minerals exports are up year-on-year by 78%, raw materials exports are up 70% year-on-year and manufactured goods exports are up 22% year-on-year.

* Government agencies such as the Nigeria Customs Service are reporting highest-ever revenue collection, while JAMB, under the new management appointed by President Buhari in 2016, remitted N7.8 billion to the coffers of the federal government. The total amount remitted by JAMB between 2010 and 2016 was a paltry N51 million!“These positive indices may not have immediately impacted positively on Nigerians, but Nigerians will definitely get a new lease of life a short while from now.

“This is because the good news from the agricultural sector, which is recording a bumper harvest, will bring down the cost of foodstuffs, especially such staple as rice, and our massive Social Investment Programme will ease the pain of the most vulnerable in the society.“When we assumed office in 2015, some 6 million farmers were involved in rice production. Thanks to the Anchor Borrowers’ programme of this administration, we have grown that number to over 12 million farmers.

“The result is that our rice import from Thailand alone has dropped from 644 metric tonnes to 22,000 MT in just two years. This is phenomenal."Apart from rice, Nigeria is also doing well in other grains, especially Millet, Sorghum and Maize.

We are now the second largest producer of sorghum after the US, the third in millet after Indiaand our breweries are now enjoying local sourcing of those commodities.“For maize, we are producing 10 million tons while we need about 13 million tons for both human and animal nutrition. Nigeria leads the world in the yam and cassava production.

We account for 70% of the world’s yam production. In two years, we hope to be the world’s largest exporter of yam!“Overall, our ambition is that agriculture should rise from 25% to 40% of GDP, so that we can banish poverty and overcome our economic anxiety.“Our Social Investment Programme is Nigeria’s most ambitious social welfare programme ever.

Tension in Idumota, Lagos over the killing of NURTW leader, Kunle Poly’saide, Ganiu Bankusa (Peiro)

There was tension at Idumota Area of Lagos Island, Lagos, yesterday,following the assassination of the personal assistant to a leader of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, Alhaji Kunle Azeez aka Kunle Poly...The deceased is identified simply as Ganiu(aka Piero).

Piero, Kunle Poly and some security guards, including two policemen, were returning from a meeting around 12 midnight on Tuesday when the gunmen opened fire on them. ..While Ganiu was hit and died on the spot, others sustained varying degrees of injury.

Kunle Poly, who heads the NURTW branches in Idumota, had called a meeting of all chairmen in motor parks in the area around 12 midnight. ..When they were done with the meeting, Kunle Poly, the two policemen guarding him, Piero, and one other union member, left for his car, which was parked at a bridge close to the office. ..Kunle Poly asked Piero to release the car key because he (Kunle Poly) wanted to drive the car by himself.

He asked Piero to go to the passenger’s side. Piero turned togo to the passenger’s side, while his boss headed towards the driver’s side. ..They were all about to enter the car when there was a gunshot. Piero was hit and he died on the spot. The union member with them was hit by another bullet in the hand.

The mopols with them wanted to return the gunfire when the gunmen rained bullets on them. ..They all took cover. Kunle Poly dodged beside the car from where he jumped onto the bridge and escaped to the other side ofthe road. The two mopols took to their heels.

Nelson Mandela's wife, Winnie hospitalized with Kidney infection

South African anti-apartheid veteran Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, has been hospitalised for a kidney infection but is expected to make a full recovery According to SA Times Live, quoting her spokesman Victor Dlamini, said the 81-year-old had complained of a “loss of appetite” and that “one of her legs was painful”. 

She was taken to Milpark Hospital in Johannesburg on Sunday.“Upon admission‚ it was discovered that she had an infection that had affected her kidneys.

“She is expected to make a full recovery and should spend approximately a week at the hospital‚” Dlamini was quoted as saying in a statement on Tuesday night.

Madikizela-Mandela’s personal assistant, Zodwa Zwane, directed all queries to Dlamini, who was not immediately available for comment.  Madikizela-Mandela, ex-wife of former South African president Nelson Mandela, has been in and out of hospital since 2016 for back and knee surgery.

During her ex-husband’s 27-year imprisonment for his fight against apartheid, Madikizela-Mandela campaigned for his release and the rights of black South Africans, undergoing arrest and banishment.

Swedish politician Magdalena Andersson insisted there will be “absolutely no cherry picking” from the UK in Brexittalks.

Speaking to Reuterslive from the World Economic Forum in Davos, Ms Andersson said: “Of course, we want to have good trading with the UK because it is good for the trade between the UK and the European Union. It’s good for the European Union and it is even more important for the UK.

“But I mean, it’s also very clear and we are being very united among EU 27 there is absolutely no cherry picking from the UK. “I think for the British people, I think it’s important to know what they actually voted for. Sometimes you get a feeling that they voted for both being poor.”

Facebook user, Oriago Bongos Akhaine, who shared the story said that the young Doctor, Ehidiamen Oakimena, who is the son of a prominent UNIBEN staff was shot with an automatic rifle by Fulani herdsmen, who blocked the road.

Here’s what he wrote; With deep pain i announce the death of Dr Ehidiamen Oakimena…a senior registrar in Dept of Anaethesia UBTH. Sorry to disturb our peace. I want to inform us that Fulani herdsmen blocked the Okada Benin road and shot this young man with automatic rifle. Recall that yesterday, President Muhammadu Buhari assured Nigerians that the rising attacks on communities by “herdsmen will soon be brought under control by security forces deployed to the vulnerable areas,” across the country. [NEWS] Stop confusing Nigerians; colonies are not ranches - Falana tells Ogbeh

- Femi Falana has asked the minister of agriculture, Audu Ogbeh, to stop misleading Nigerians by referring to cattle colonies as ranches

- Ogbeh had stated that both were the same; and that the only difference was that colonies were much larger than ranches- However, Falana stated that such statement may mislead herders into thinking that they can colonise the states where they are given land to set up ranches

The federal government has been asked by renowned human rights lawyer, Femi Falana (SAN), to stop confusing Nigerians by renaming colonies as ranches, The Cable reports.

His comments were in response to comments made by the minister of agriculture, Audu Ogbeh, that Nigerians had misinterpreted what the government meant by colonies.

NAIJ.com gathers that Ogbeh had stated that colonies were the same as ranches. In his words:“When we spoke of colonies, we were immediately greeted with reactions that this was an attempt to cease Nigeria’s land and give to the Fulanis to colonise.

The intention is not for Fulanis or anyone to colonise any territory. Colonies and ranches are the same thing in many ways, except that a colony is bigger than a ranch.“In colonies, 20, 30 ranchers can share the same colony. A ranch is usually owned by an individual or company with few numbers of cows. In a cattle colony you could find 100, 200, 300 cows owned by different individuals."However, Falana stated that the minister’s statement may mislead herders into thinking that they can colonise the states where they are given land to set up ranches.

He stated:“While this belated decision is a welcome development, Chief Audu Ogbeh should be restrained from causing confusion by giving the misleading impression that the federal government intends to allow owners of cattle to colonise the states that have donated land for the establishment of ranches.“In other words, Chief Ogbeh should notbe allowed to sabotage the establishment of the ranches with his pet project of ‘cattle colonies’.“Since a ranch is a large area of land acquired for raising grazing livestock such as cattle or sheep for the production of meat the proposed, ranches should not be called cattle colonies.”
