Rapper, Meek Mill Headed Back to Prison; Judge Denies Request for New Trial

Rapper Meek Mill lost his bid for a new trial on Tuesday. The troubled rapper went before his arch nemesis Judge Genece Brinkley in a Philadelphia courtroom on Tuesday.

The judge denied his request for a new trial stemming from his 2007 arrest on gun charges. Judge Brinkley cited the reason behind her decision:

“After an in-depth review of the record, court history, notes of testimony, and evidence submitted at the evidentiary hearing, this court hereby denies defendant’s petition for PCRA relief as defendant failed to meet his burden of proof.”

Brinkley originally sentenced Mill to 2-4 years in prison for violating his probation in 2017.
But after a swell of public protests and support from fellow rappers and corporate leaders, the Pennsylvania Supreme Court overturned Judge Brinkley’s sentence in April.
Mill served 5 months of his sentence before he was freed pending today’s hearing.

The judge’s new decision means Mill will be back behind bars. His lawyers plan to appeal the judge’s decision.

“We are not at all surprised by Judge Brinkley‘s decision today. Despite the agreement of the District Attorney’s office on the need for a new trial, and the granting of new trials to other identically situated defendants, Judge Brinkley made clear during the hearing on June 18th that she had already decided the matter,” Mill’s attorney Joe Tacopina told USA TODAY .

Since his much-publicized release from prison in April, Meek has not done much in the way of advocating for prison reform like he promised he would.

He was scheduled to meet with President Trump in May, but he backed out of the visit after receiving a phone call from rapper JAY-Z on behalf of former President Barack Obama.

Rapper Meek Mill has backed out of a visit to the White House to attend a panel discussion on prison reform. According to published reports, Mill canceled his visit on Friday after speaking to rapper Jay Z.

Mill said he backed out of the visit to shift the focus from himself to prison reform.

“I was originally scheduled to be part of a panel on Prison Reform at the White House to help shed light on the issues within the system,” said Mill, whose legal name is Robert Rihmeek Williams.

“Unfortunately, the focus turned to the President and Myself which concerned me that it might take away from creating a positive result from today’s discussions.”
He added, “As a result, I decided not to attend so that the focus would be solely on fixing our prison system. Most importantly I remain fully committed to improving our criminal justice system.”

Mill was released from a Pennsylvania prison in April after serving 5 months of a 2-4 year sentence for violating the terms of his probation. At the time he said he would be a powerful voice to help change the criminal justice system.

Stars Attend Game 2 of Philadelphia 76ers vs Boston Celtics

Power couple Gucci Mane and Keyshia Ka’Oir were among the celebrities in attendance as the Philadelphia 76ers lost game 2 to the red hot Boston Celtics in the 2nd round of the NBA playoff game in Boston on Thursday.

Keyshia posted a photo of her herself and her husband sitting courtside at the TD Garden.

Gucci wore a throwback Boston Celtics jersey to show support for his team, while Keyshia was clad in head-to-toe Christian Dior.

American rapper, Meek Mill has been released from prison after being incarcerated for violating his probation.
Meek Mill, who was sentenced after violating his probation on a drug and weapon’s case regained his freedom on Monday.

The Supreme Court of Pennsylvania made the decision to release him following a long legal battle challenging his conviction.
Speaking shortly after his release, Meek Mill told Billboard that “I’d like to thank God, my family, my friends, my attorneys, my team at Roc Nation including JAY-Z, Desiree Perez, my good friend Michael Rubin, my fans.”

He also thanked, “The Pennsylvania Supreme Court and all my public advocates for their love, support and encouragement during this difficult time.

“While the past five months have been a nightmare, the prayers, visits, calls, letters and rallies have helped me stay positive.
“To the Philadelphia District Attorney’s office, I’m grateful for your commitment to justice not only for my case, but for others that have been wrongfully jailed due to police misconduct.”

He further said “although I’m blessed to have the resources to fight this unjust situation, I understand that many people of colour across the country don’t have that luxury and I plan to use my platform to shine a light on those issues.
”In the meantime, I plan to work closely with my legal team to overturn this unwarranted conviction and look forward to reuniting with my family and resuming my music career.”

Rumors swirled on Twitter.com that Williams would be released from prison in time to attend the Philadelphia 76ers 1st playoff game.“As far as I know there is no truthto those reports,” Williams’ lawyer, Joe Tacopina, said in an email toPhillyVoice.comon Thursday.

Williams was sentenced to 2-to-4 years in prison last year for violating his probation in a 2008 weapons case.After Williams was shipped off toprison, his fans protested in the streets, with many saying the sentence was too harsh.

Meek Mill has been humbled in prison. TMZ reports that Meek Mill was being paid 19 cents an hour for washing dishes while serving time up to four years at the Pennsylvania's SCI Chester.

Meek cleans the cell block, tidies up prison grounds and washes dishes,' the insider said. 'He also cooks food and serves it up, too.'
That pays him just 19 cents per hour. The rapper is reportedly worth $3m.

And if he keeps up his good behavior he can get access to 'electrical and carpentry shops' as well as 'therapy courses.'

Mill's imprisonment on a probation violation has set off a flurry of legal appeals, criticism of the criminal justice system, newspaper opinion pieces, rallies, billboards and bus ads.

Should he fancy himself with a book, he can read it at the on -site library or in his cell . Gym time will depend on which job he ends up taking .. . which , by the way, pays 19 cents an hour.

He ' ll be assigned a job and has 2 choices -- cleaning cells or cooking .
