Francis Ford Coppola Agrees With Martin Scorsese’s Criticism Of Marvel Films – Calls Them ‘Despicable’

Once again, a huge name amongst film directors is dragging Marvel and the superhero movies in general and fans are not happy. Famed filmmaker best known for movies such as Apocalypse Now and The Godfather, Francis Ford Coppola, defended Martin Scorsese who also previously slammed the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

It is safe to say that he held absolutely nothing back!

Yahoo! News was the first to report that yesterday, while accepting the Lumiere Award in Lyon, France, Coppola said: ‘When Martin Scorsese says the Marvel pictures aren’t cinema, he is right because we expect to learn something from cinema, to gain something, enlightenment, knowledge, inspiration…I do not know that anybody gets anything out of seeing the same movie over and over again. Martin was kind when he said it is not cinema. He did not say it is despicable, which I just say it is.’

As you can imagine, his harsh comments were quick to offend the MCU fans who took to social media to defend the genre against the 80-year-old director.

One such user argued: ‘Disappointed to see the comments by Scorsese + Coppola about Marvel MCU movies. Their comments reflect those that comic book fans have dealt w/ for years from people who thumb their noses at comics + refuse to consider comics can teach/be literature because it’s beneath them.’’

Someone else also accused Coppola of being a hypocrite, saying that he always praises the achievements of George Lucas whose Stars Wars movies pretty much created the ‘blueprint for the modern Marvel blockbuster.’

A third user stressed that they’d rather watch another Marvel film than one made by Coppola.

They argued that the Marvel Universe at least has characters that are worth celebrating.

Finally, the same person also stated that they hate how all ‘these old men directors’ believe all cinema needs to be just one style and form!
