#Facebook and #Instagram are down for some users around the world

Facebook and Instagram appear to be partially down for some users around the world today. While you can open both platforms, it looks like you can’t send or receive messages on either platform, and you can’t post new content either.

WhatsAppappeared to be fine for many people, but users in Paraguay, India, Bangladesh, Argentina, and more note that they are experiencing issues with sending messages. DownDetector indicates that those in Brazil were experiencing the most severe outages.
We tested multiple accounts at The Verge, and found that Messenger couldn’t load at all on desktop, although the mobile app was working. Instagram was worse: posts weren’t loading, Instagram Stories were down, and direct messages and the button to post new content were also not working. Facebook’s ad section was not functioning either, and it led to an internal error when you tried to buy an ad.
About an hour after users noted the outage, Facebook responded on Twitter. It also noted that “the issue is not related to a DDoS attack.”

We’re aware that some people are currently having trouble accessing the Facebook family of apps. We’re working to resolve the issue as soon as possible.

12.4K people are talking about this

Instagram on desktop as of 1PM ET.

According to DownDetector, it looks like the outages are mainly in New England; Texas; Seattle, Washington; parts of Latin America, including Peru; the UK; India; and the Philippines. Users have written in from Canada, Las Vegas, and Turkey to note outages there as well. We’ve reached out to Facebook and Instagram to learn more.
It now looks like Oculus is also down. One user in California wrote in to The Verge, “Nobody can log in to any multiplayer games purchased through the Oculus store. They also can’t access their Oculus Home environments.” Users also reported being unable to buy games from the Oculus store.

@oculus , i am having problems managing apps on the dashboard: users in release channel that were already in are not appearing now. Are your systems having some sort of issues today?
Hey there, we're currently looking into an issue on our end, and hope to have it resolved soon. We really appreciate your patience. Thank you!

See Oculus Support's other Tweets
Other users noted that attempting to use Facebook to sign into apps like Tinder or Spotify wasn’t working either. Attempting to do so would bring up an error saying this feature isn’t available right now. If you were already signed into Spotify, it appears that your login is still valid, but once you sign out, you’ll be unable to get back in.

Update! World Wide Web inventor wants new ‘contract’ to make web safe

The inventor of the World Wide Web on Monday called for a “ contract” to make internet safe and accessible for everyone as Europe’s largest tech event began in Lisbon amid a backlash over its role in spreading “fake news ”.

Some 70 ,000 people are expected to take part in the four - day Web Summit, dubbed “the Davos for geeks”, including speakers from leading global tech companies , politicians and start - ups hoping to attract attention from the over 1 , 500 investors who are scheduled to attend. Tech firms now find themselves on the defensive , with critics accusing them of not doing enough to curb the spread of “fake news ” which has helped polarise election campaigns around the world and of maximising profits by harvesting data on consumers ’ browsing habits .

British computer scientist Tim Berners - Lee, who in 1989 invented the World Wide Web as a way to exchange information , said the internet had deviated from the goals its founders had envisaged .
“All kinds of things have things have gone wrong . We have fake news , we have problems with privacy, we have people being profiled and manipulated,” he said in an opening address . Berners - Lee, 63 , called on governments, companies and citizens to iron out a “complete contract” for the web that will make the internet “safe and accessible ” for all by May 2019 , the date by which 50 per cent of the world will be online for the first time .

– ‘ Going through a funk ’ –
He has just launched Inrupt , a start -up which is building an open - source platform called “ Solid” which will decentralise the web and allow users to choose where their data is kept , along with who can see and access it. Solid intends to allow users to bypass tech giants such as Google and Facebook. The two tech giants now have direct influence over nearly three quarters of all internet traffic thanks to the vast amounts of apps and services they own such as YouTube, WhatsApp and Instagram .

Employees of Google, Facebook and other tech giants have in recent months gone public with their regrets, calling the products they helped build harmful to society and overly addictive.
Tech giants are also under fire for having built up virtual monopolies in their areas . Amazon accounts for 93 per cent of all e - book sales while Google swallows up 92 per cent of all European internet- search ad spending..“I think technology is going through a funk … it’s a period of reflection,” Web Summit founder and CEO Paddy Cosgrave told AFP .

Google+ to shut down after 500,000 users’ data breach

Google will shut down the consumer version of its social network Google+ after announcing data from up to 500,000 users may have been exposed to external developers by a bug that was present for more than two years in its systems.

The company said in a blog on Monday it had discovered and patched the leak in March of this year and had no evidence of misuse of user data or that any developer was aware or had exploited the vulnerability.
Shares of its parent company Alphabet Inc, however, were down 1.5 percent at $1150.75 in response to what was the latest in a run of privacy issues to hit the United States’ big tech companies.

The Wall Street Journal reported earlier that Google had opted not to disclose the issue with its Application Program Interfaces (API) partly due to fears of regulatory scrutiny, citing unnamed sources and internal documents.
Google said it had reviewed the issue, looking at the type of data involved, whether it could accurately identify the users to inform, whether there was any evidence of misuse, and whether there were any actions a developer or user could take.
“None of these thresholds were met in this instance,” it said.
“We found no evidence that any developer was aware of this bug, or abusing the API, and we found no evidence that any Profile data was misused.”
Under the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), if personal data is breached, a company needs to inform a supervisory authority within 72 hours, unless the breach is unlikely to result in a risk to the rights and freedom of users.

“It seems like the downside risk of having a story that says they intentionally hid information about a major breach from users is bigger than the upside of avoiding scrutiny,” said Geoffrey Parker, an engineering professor at Ivy League college Dartmouth.
“I wonder if there wasn’t more depth to the internal debate.”
Google said a software glitch in the social site gave outside developers potential access to private Google+ profile data between a major redesign in 2015 and March 2018, when internal investigators discovered and fixed the issue.
The affected data was limited to static, optional Google+ Profile fields including name, email address, occupation, gender and age.

The WSJ report said that a memo, prepared by Google’s legal and policy staff and shared with senior executives, warned that disclosing the incident would likely trigger “immediate regulatory interest” and invite comparisons to Facebook’s leak of user information to data firm Cambridge Analytica.
Allegations of the improper use of data for 87 million Facebook users by Cambridge Analytica, which was hired by President Trump’s 2016 U.S. election campaign, has hurt the shares of the world’s biggest social network and prompted multiple investigations in the United States and Europe.

Google Chief Executive Officer Sundar Pichai was briefed on the plan not to notify users after an internal committee had reached that decision, according to the WSJ.
Google came under criticism for refusing to send a top executive to a Senate Intelligence Committee hearing on Sept. 5 about efforts to counteract foreign influence in U.S. elections and political discourse.
“I think Google does have a public relationship issue and this now makes their lack of openness even worse,” Ivan Feinseth, an analyst at Tigress Financial Partners said.
Facebook’s chief operating officer and Twitter’s chief executive testified at the hearing, where an empty chair was pointedly left for Google after the committee rejected Google’s top lawyer as a witness.

Facebook Founder, Mark Zuckerberg Apex to Become the World’s Third Richest Person

Facebook Inc. co-founder Mark Zuckerberg has overtaken Warren Buffett as the world’s third-richest person, further solidifying technology as the most robust creator of wealth.

Zuckerberg, who trails only Amazon.com Inc. founder Jeff Bezos and Microsoft Corp. co-founder Bill Gates, eclipsed Buffett Friday as Facebook shares climbed 2.4 percent, according to the
Bloomberg Billionaires Index.

It’s the first time that the three wealthiest people on the ranking made their fortunes from technology. Zuckerberg, 34, is now worth $81.6 billion, about $373 million more than Buffett, the 87-year-old chairman and chief executive officer of Berkshire Hathaway Inc.

Zuckerberg’s ascent has been driven by investors’ continued embrace of Facebook, the social-network giant that shook off the fallout from a data-privacy crisis that hammered its shares, sending them to an eight-month low of $152.22 on March 27. The stock closed Friday at a record $203.23.

Technology fortunes make up about a fifth of the more than $5 trillion in wealth tracked by the Bloomberg index, more than any other sector. The ranking, which tracks the world’s 500 richest people, is updated after the close of each trading day in New York.

Buffett, once the world’s wealthiest person, is sliding in the ranking thanks to his charitable giving, which he kicked off in earnest in 2006. He’s donated about 290 million Berkshire Hathaway Class B shares to charities, most of it to Gates’s foundation. Those shares are now worth more than $50 billion, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.

Zuckerberg has pledged to give away 99 percent of his Facebook stock in his lifetime.

Facebook Foubder, Mark Zuckerberg now launches IGTV to rival YouTube

Instagram has announced a new TV service IGTV that appears designed to lure young viewers away from YouTube andback in the clutches of Mark Zuckerberg. And it features one major difference from its rival:

Instagram’s video display will be designed to fill a verticalsmartphone screen, rather than horizontal displays like YouTube. The featured is called IGTV and will increaseFacebook-owned Instagram’s video time limit from one minute to 10 minutes for most users. Accounts with large audiences will be able to go on for as long as an hour. The video will be available through Instagram or a new app called IGTV.The video will eventuallygiveFacebookmore opportunities to sell advertising.

It’s the latest instance in which Instagram has ripped a page from a rival’s playbook in an effort to preserve its status as a place for young people to share and view content. In this case, Instagram is mimicking Google’s YouTube. Before, Facebook and Instagram have copied Snapchat – another magnet for teens and young adults.

Instagram, now nearly 8 years old, is moving further from its roots as a photo-sharing service as it dives headlong intoa longer-form video. The initiative comes as parent company Facebook struggles to attract teens, while also dealing with a scandal that exposed its leaky controls for protecting users’ personal information.Instagram, which Facebook bought for $1 billion six years ago, now has 1 billion users, up from 800 million ninemonths ago.

More importantly, 72 percent of U.S. kids rangingfrom 13 to 17 years old use Instagram, second to YouTube at 85 per cent, according to the Pew Research Center.

[NEWS] Sex robots that can cook and keep the home clean efficiently will be available by 2019

According to reports, tech companies that are producing realistic sex robots are trying to reach the next level in creating sex robots that can cook and clean. The company spokesperson says the cooking and cleaning sex robots can be available for purchase as soon as 2019.

In recent months, Sex Robots have become a very hot topic, both criticized and praised. Many think sex robots will have a negative impact on society and sex life, as people may choose sex robots over actual people.

With many people on Twitter making jokes about how sex robots cannot cook and clean, unfortunately for them, cleaning and cooking sex robots is already happening. Jan Kunchai, an engineer at RealBotix says“I’ve dated around six women in my entire life and all six cheated on me, I’m six for six like Jordan.

Anyways i thought it would be a good idea to create a robot that can cook and clean so i don’t have to get cheated on anymore, the next step would probably be a sex robot that can reproduce”.

Although a sex robot that can cook and clean efficiently seems like a very difficut task, company engineers say they can be here by 2019..

WhatsApp has revealed some new major news which proves why it's become so popular

If there was any question about the success of WhatsApp this latest news proves just how popular it's become.

In a recent earnings call, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg revealed that the WhatsApp service now has 1.5 billion monthly active users.
What is probably even more impressive is that these record number of users send a staggering 60 billion messages every day.
Facebook bought WhatsApp back in 2014 for $19 billion (£13.4billion) and that investment appears to have been worth every penny.

Along with WhatsApp success, Zuckerberg also revealed that Facebook-owned Instagram is now the most popular Story-sharing product in the world.

According to TechCrunch, Instagram Stories now has around 300 million daily active users, that’s compared to some 178 million who opt for rival service Snapchat.
The news of these huge numbers comes as WhatsApp recently revealed another record.

The messaging firm said it saw 75 billion messages sent across the service on New Year’s Eve.
That number eclipses any other day in WhatsApp’s history with the previous record of 65 million on New Year’s Eve 2016 well and truly smashed.

WhatsApp says that of the 75 billion messages sent, 13 billion were photos and five billion included videos.

As well as WhatsApp having a record night, its owners Facebook also revealed some big statistics.
In a blog posted on their website, Product Manager, Erin Connolly, revealed that Facebook Live saw a huge increase in activity.

“The night topped last year’s live broadcast activity, with people sharing 47% more live videos than last year,” he said.
“People were excited to count down to 2018 with friends — wherever they were.

“We saw more than 3 times as many broadcasts with a friend on New Year’s Eve compared to an average day in December, making it the biggest day so far for Live With.”

In other WhatsApp news the firm has just pushed-out a substantial update to the iPhone version of its hugely-successful messaging app.
On the iTunes App Store, the description for the new update revealed that it contained “Bug Fixes”.
However, that description undersells the WhatsApp update, which contains a number of nifty fixes and features.

The new version of WhatsApp on iOS – version 2.18.2 – has added support for Apple's in-vehicle connectivity system, CarPlay.
Until now, WhatsApp access was only possible via Siri while driving.

The GOP tax bill could add billions to Amazon, Facebook and Google’s bottom lines

Amazon, Google and Facebook will save a combined $4.5 billion on taxes thank to the GOP tax bill, according to Cowen.

Cowen estimates that Amazon, Google and Facebook will save a combined $4.5 billion on taxes in 2018 thanks to the GOP tax bill.
They should also benefit from the bill's capex expensing provision.
The GOP tax bill » has long been expected to boost corporate profits. Now we know just how much the biggest tech companies in the US stand to save — and what that could mean for their bottom lines.

Google » will save $2.28 billion in 2018, while Facebook » will see $1.56 billion in savings and
Amazon » will enjoy a $723 million break, according to estimates from Cowen senior research analyst John Blackledge.

The firm forecasts those savings will translate to big earnings-per-share (EPS) boosts for each company, with Amazon the big winner, boasting an expected upside of 24%. Google and Facebook will both get an EPS bump of 8%, Cowen said.

For context, the Cowen's analysis is based on three assumptions: (1) the US corporate tax rate goes to 22% from 35% on January 1, 2018, (2) there are no changes to international taxes, and (3) there's no impact from other aspects of the tax bill.
But the good news for the mega-cap tech triumvirate doesn't end there.

Cowen sees Google, Facebook and Amazon also benefiting from the proposed capital expenditure expensing provision in the GOP tax bill. The firm estimates that the companies will spend a combined $234 billion on capex from 2018 to 2022, noting that Facebook has said it plans to double reinvestment in 2018.

So there you have it — three of the hottest tech firms in the US look poised to keep adding to their dominance, all thanks to the GOP tax bill. Bet against them at your own peril.

Snapchat CEO, Spiegel hopes to save Snapchat with an algorithmic feed

Snap got destroyed by Wall Street today after a horrible Q3 earnings where revenue and user growth fell well under expectations. So to get things going in the right direction, CEO Evan Spiegel says Snapchat will make some bold moves not everyone will like.

Specifically, it’s redesigning the app to be easier for older people to use, and it’s using data to power an algorithmically sorted Stories feed instead of the strictly reverse-chronological one it uses now.

In the prepared remarks for today’s earnings call, Spiegel wrote about these changes:

REDESIGN

“One thing that we have heard over the years is that Snapchat is difficult to understand or hard to use, and our team has been working on responding to this feedback. As a result,we are currently redesigning our application to make it easier to use.

There is a strong likelihood that the redesign of our application will be disruptive to our business in the short term, and we don’t yet know how the behavior of our community will change when they begin to use our updated application. We’re willing to take that risk for what we believe are substantial longterm benefits to our business.”

Algorithmically personalized Stories feed

“We are developing a new solution that provides each of our 178 million Daily Active Users with their own Stories experience, leveraging the tremendous benefits of machine learning without compromising the editorial integrity of the Stories platform that we have worked so hard to build.

As part of our efforts around Search and Maps, we now index millions of Stories every day, meaning we have the long tail of content necessary to provide a truly personal experience. We hope that showing the right Stories to the right audience will help grow engagement and monetization for our partners and for Snapchat.”During the earnings call, Spiegel discussed how he saw Facebook as wisely evolving the content-sharing format with its personalized feed of friends, but now sees another opportunity for progress.

He explained how Facebook’s feed encourages people to add more friends so it has more posts to drawfrom, but Spiegel believes that people share less personal content when exposed to a larger audience. But if Snapchat integrates premium video and search-based content, it could fill gaps in friend content without incentivizing you to over-friend. To a similar end, Snap plans to make Snap Map more accessible, as right now it’s invisibly buried behind a pinch gesture on the home screen.

With only 2.9 percent user growth, to 178 million daily users, Snapchat just isn’t growing fast enough to satisfy investors or keep up with Facebook’s clones. Instagram Stories and WhatsApp Status both now have 300 million daily users, dwarfing the app they cloned.

In April, I implored Snapchat to move to an algorithmically sorted Stories feed to make it easier for people to find their best friends and things they care about, instead of using the reverse-chronological feed that shows what happens to have been posted most recently.

Right now, Snapchat’s content is scattered across the Stories list, the Discover channel, search and Snap Map. Snapchat could benefit from using all its data on what people watch to curate a personalized feed of the most relevant content from across the app. That could be best friends, influencers, premium Shows, topic-based Stories Search compilations and peeks into interesting nearby places, landmarks and events.
But if Snap screws up these redesigns and new features, it could see even more teens abandon the app.

There’s a big risk that teens say they liked the old Snapchat better, and might as well just use Instagram. Spiegel and Snap have historically relied on instincts rather than data to design products. But now those instincts have led Snapastray, and it will require a philosophical shift as well as a product one to save the company.

Tips - How to Erase iPhone's Data Before Selling It

For security reasons, there is a need for one to wipe off his personal data from his mobile phone before transferring ownership as it could be detrimental.

A new version of iPhone will soon be available in the stores nationwide. Apple just launched iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus with upgraded features and it started shipping on September 22.

The phones come with 64GB or 256GB storage. Come November 3, the company will also start receiving pre-orders for iPhone X to mark its 10th anniversary.
Which of the latest version of iPhone has caught your fancy? Are you planning to trade in your old phone for a new iPhone? Whichever version you decide to buy, remember you will need to backup all your information on the old one. Your pictures, videos, documents, emails, contacts, and other personal information should not be shared with the new buyer.
Follow these simple steps highlighted by www.lifewire.com to make sure that every trace of you and your life has been wiped from the phone.

Make a backup of your iPhone’s data
If you are getting a new iPhone, you will need to make sure that your old one is backed up so that when you restore the data to your new phone. Everything will be current and you won’t have to start from the scratch.
Depending on which version of iOS you are using and your sync preference settings, you should either backup to your computer or the iCloud service.

Currently, the iCloud service will backup almost everything that you need to restore your iPhone but it is possible that some apps will not support backup to the iCloud.
Also, some really old versions of iPhones such as the original iPhone and iPhone 3G don’t have access to the iCloud service so you will need to use a computer as backup using the iPhone’s docking cable. Follow the steps below to do this.

- Connect your iPhone to the computer you normally sync it with.

- Open iTunes and click on your iPhone from the left-hand navigation pane.

- From the iPhone’s page on the right side of the screen, click the “Back up to this computer” check box.

- Right-click the iPhone from the window pane on the left side of the screen and click “Back Up” from the pop-up menu.

Note: If you have purchased some items on your phone and haven’t transferred these purchases to your computer yet, right-click the iPhone and choose “Transfer Purchases” to transfer the purchases prior to backup.

Make sure the back-up process succeeds before performing the following steps:

Erase all of your iPhone’s data and settings
Since you don’t want the buyer to have access to your personal data, you will need to wipe the phone clean of all of your personal data. Follow these instructions to clear the data on your phone.

- Tap the settings ‘gear icon’ from the home screen or any other page it is located on your iPhone.

- Tap the “General” settings menu item.

Choose the “Reset” menu item.
Tap on the “Erase All Content and Settings” menu item.

- The process can take between a few minutes to several hours so it is probably something that you don’t want to do while you are waiting in line to trade your phone in.

I found the hard way that just because you wiped your iPhone’s data doesn’t mean that everything linking you to the phone has been removed. There are some apps that may still be linked based on your phone’s unique hardware ID.
If you use any apps that allow you to authenticate based on your iPhone’s unique hardware ID, you should visit the apps websites to unlink the phone to your account. This is because some apps retain your personal information as long as they are still linked your iPhone’s unique ID. You can link your new phone to your account after you install the apps on your new iPhone.

The Giant Social Network Hit 2 Billion Users - Facebook

The social media network giant Facebook says its ranks of monthly active users have hit the two billion mark -or more than a quarter of the world’s population.

“As of this morning, the Facebook community is now officially 2 billion people!” co-founder and chief executive Mark Zuckerberg wrote in a post on his Facebook page marking the milestone.

“We’re making progress connecting the world, and now let’s bring the world closer together,” he wrote. “It’s an honor to be on this journey with you.”

Naomi Gleit, a vice president at the internet giant, credited millions of small communities at Facebook for helping drive growth.
More than a billion people take part in “groups” at Facebook each month and more than 800 million people “like” something at the social network on an average day, she added.

Founded in 2004, Facebook hit the billion-user mark five years ago.
Meanwhile, the social network announced that it deleted about 66,000 posts a week in the last two months in an effort to crack down on what it deems to be hate speech.
The company said in a blog post that deleting posts can “feel like censorship”, but that it is working on explaining its process better and improving its enforcement of hate speech.

Facebook defines hate speech as attacks on people based on their race, sexual orientation and other “protected characteristics”.
As part of that effort, Facebook says it plans to hire an additional 3,000 people in the next year to review posts. That is on top of the 4,500 people it currently has reviewing posts.
