Serena William’s infant daughter Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr. turns 1 on Saturday, but Serena and her husband Alexis Ohanian aren’t planning to celebrate with a birthday cake and gifts.

At a press conference ahead of the U.S. Open last weekend, Serena
explained why she and her husband won’t mark their baby’s 1st birthday with a lavish party.
“Olympia doesn’t celebrate birthdays,” said Williams. “We’re Jehovah’s Witnesses, so we don’t do that,” she said.

Jehovah’s Witnesses are Christians who don’t celebrate birthdays or Christmas because they believe holidays have pagan origins. They also don’t believe in accepting gifts that celebrate holidays.

Other famous Jehovah’s Witnesses in Black history include Serena’s sister Venus Williams, and the late musicians Michael Jackson, Selena Quintanilla Pérez and Prince.
Michael eventually dissociated himself from the Jehovah’s Witnesses because they disapproved of his music, particularly “Thriller” with its supernatural theme.

Tennis Champion, Serena Williams banned from wearing catsuit at French Open

The 23-time Grand Slam champion made a statement when she made her return to Grand Slam tennis this year wearing the eye-catching outfit at Roland Garros, following the birth of her first child in 2017.

At that time Serena Williams said she felt like a “superhero” after wearing the catsuit during her 7-6 (7-4) 6-4 win over Kristyna Pliskova in May. But in a new interview, the president of the French Tennis Association’s president Bernard Giudicelli told Tennis Magazine that the tournament will now have a dress code because he believes “sometimes we’ve gone too far.”

He singled out Williams’ bodysuit, explaining that it “will no longer be accepted,” according to the Associated Press.

“One must respect the game and the place,” Giudicelli said, adding that while the French Open will “impose certain limits,” its rules won’t be as strict as Wimbledon’s where players must wear all white.

Serena Withdraws From The Rogers Cup

Serena Williams has pulled out of next week's Rogers Cup hard-court tournament, citing personal reasons.

The tournament announced Williams' withdrawal yesterday and would not elaborate. 'Of course, we are disappointed that Serena will not be joining us. Fans were very much looking forward to seeing her in action,' tournament director Eugene Lapierre said in a statement.

'But beyond the disappointment, the tournament, as a whole, remains a high-level competition. The entire top 10 is here, along with 22 of the top 25. There are exciting matches in store from the outset.'
The 23-time Grand Slam champion is coming off the most lopsided defeat of her career, a 6-1, 6-0 loss to Johanna Konta in San Jose, California, on Tuesday.

The 36-year-old Williams was the runner-up at Wimbledon last month. That was just her fourth tournament since returning to the tour after having a baby in September and dealing with a health scare related to blood clots.

The year's last major tournament, the U.S. Open, starts on Aug. 27.
Williams will be replaced in the draw at Montreal by Tatjana Maria, who faces Alize Cornet in the first round.

Serena Williams suffers defeat on comeback

New mum, Serena Williams on Saturday suffered defeat on her comeback from a maternity break as French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko powered to victory in the “first to ten points” final set at the Mubadala World Championship in Abu Dhabi.

The championship is an exhibition tournament. The slow moving 36-year-old Williams looked static and far from full fitness just four months after the birth of her first child and Ostapenko, a 20-year-old Latvian, won 6-2, 3-6, 10/5.“The first match is always really hard after a break,” Williams said.

The 36-year-old American, winner of 23 grand slam single titles, was making a comeback after taking nearly 11 months off to have her first child. Her last match was the Australian Open final, which she won despite being two-month pregnant.“It was good to be back out there. I missed playing, I missed competition, I missed the crowd, the atmosphere so much. It was really nice to be back,” said Williams after the match.“I don’t know if I am totally ready to come back on the Tour yet. I know that when I come back I definitely want to be competing for championships,” she said, refusing to commit yet to the Australian Open, which starts in a little over two weeks.

“I don’t know, but I am definitely looking forward to getting back out there.“I am taking it one day at a time. I am going to assess everything with Patrick (Mouratoglou, her coach) and my team,” she said. It was the first time Ostapenko had playedagainst Williams, whom she described as her “childhood idol”.
