UPDATE - JAMB finally releases 2019 UTME results

The Joint Admissions and Matriculations Board has announced the release of the 2019 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) results.

The results of the April 11 and 17 university admissions tests had long been expected, but the board said they were delayed by investigations into suspected cheating. At a press conference in Abuja on Saturday, the registrar of the board, Ishaq Oloyede, said the results of 1,792,719 candidates were released.

 Thousandsof results were withheld because investigations were still ongoing, he said. “Today, we are releasing the results of 1,792,719 candidates. Some 34,120 results are being withheld including the results of 15,145 candidates being further clarified as identical twins and siblings,” he said.

He said 1,886,508 candidates registered for the exams across the country. The number includes candidates who registered at foreign centres. “Out of this number, which excludes the Direct Entry candidates, 59,667 were absent. A total of 1,826,839 sat the UTME,” he said.

JAMB official makes U-turn, says N36m collected by her superior and not snake

Philomina Chieshe, the official of the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB), who some weeks ago claimed that the board’s N36 million was swallowed by a snake, has made a U-turn.

Chieshe, who works as a clerk at the JAMB office in Markurdi, Benue state, initially told top officials of the examination body that a “mysterious snake” swallowed the money gotten from the sale of JAMB scratch cards.

However, when she appeared before the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), she confessed that the money was collected by one Samuel Umoru, her superior.
A fact sheet released by the Antigraft agency indicated that Chieshe was first quizzed on February 16th 2017 and she made additional statements on April 7 and 13 2017, May 30, 2017 and June 28, 2017.

Philomina Chieshe, the lady in the eye of the Naira eating snake storm in JAMB, has been singing before the EFCC. And, contrary to her claim before the leadership of the examination body that the N36 million proceed from sale of scratch cards were eaten up by a snake, Chieshe told operatives of the anti- graft agency that the money was collected piecemeal from her by her coordinator, Mr. Samuel Sale Umoru. In one of the statements she volunteered to the EFCC, Chieshe, who is a clerk in the Makurdi office of JAMB, revealed that the Coordinator usually asked her to withdraw proceeds of the sale of the Scratch Cards from her account in two new generation banks.

This money I withdrew, the coordinator used it for the office and some time for himself. She claimed that she had been warning Umoru that it was improper to use the money for miscellaneous expenses in the office or for private purposes but he would not listen. She also claimed that Umoru was in the habit of drawing IOU from the proceeds of the sale of the cards without reimbursing her. Some of the withdrawals which she claimed were at the behest of the coordinator included the N340,000 withdrawn on May 5 and 26, 2014 with ATM card.

She also disclosed that she used her ATM card to withdraw N120,000 for the coordinator between June 17 and 18, 2014. “He instructed me to withdraw N640,000, using my card between June 30, 2014 and July 7, 201.”
An EFCC official who spoke to The Nation, said “ The investigating team had verified the withdrawals after a careful analysis of the statements of account of the suspect. Mr. Umoru had also been arrested and questioned about claims by Chieshe. Umoru did not deny the allegations. He was however released on administrative bail but had been reporting monthly to the anti- graft agency.

The interesting aspect of the disclosure is that Chieshe’s statement was obtained long before the snake and Naira swallowing testimony became public knowledge. In all her statements before the EFCC, there was no mention of any episode of any snake and the disappearance of monies in her care. In a fact-sheet regarding the investigations, Chieshe was quoted to have said her superior — the coordinator at the Markurdi office — had asked her to withdraw the N36 million. ”

The suspect told the antigraft agency that she had been warning Umoru “that it was improper to use the money for miscellaneous expenses in the office or for private purposes but he would not listen.”
Other JAMB officials being investigated include Tanko Labaran who could not account for N23 million from sale of scratch cards at the Nasarawa office, and Yakubu Jakada who is yet to explain the whereabouts of N20 million e-facilities cards sold in Kano office.
All the suspects have been released on bail pending the outcome of the antigraft agency's investigations.

[NEWS] Housemaid accused of turning to snake to swallow N36m in JAMB office finally speaks

The housemaid accused of turning to a snake through which she swallowed N36m from the vault in the account office of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board,JAMB, in Makurdi, Benue State, 16-year-old Dor, has opened up to what happened.

Philomena Chieshe, a sales clerk in JAMB office, Makurdi shocked the world penultimate weeks ago after she claimed that her housemaid connived with another JAMB staff, Joan Asen, to “spiritually” swallow N36m from the vault in her office.

In her confessional statement, while being interrogated by a team of auditors, she said that Joan Asen and her accomplices confessed that they have been stealing the money “spiritually” through a mysterious snake that always sneaked into theoffice to swallow the money from the vault.

According to her,“It was a mystery to me too. I have been saving the money in the bank, but I found it difficult to account for it. So I started saving it in a vault in the office. But each time I open the vault, Iwill find nothing. I became worried and surprised how the millions of Naira could be disappearing from the vault’.

“I began to interrogate everybody in the house and office, and no one could agree on what might have happened to the money. I continued to press until my housemaid confessed.

She said that the money disappeared “spiritually”. She said that a “mysterious snake” sneaked into the house and swallowed the money in the vault.”However, when DAILY POST reached out to the erstwhile housemaid, who was relieved of her job following the shocking revelation in November 2017, she denied ever confessing to having turned to a snake or swallowing any money.

Dor, a native of Angantivin Obi LGA of Nasarawa State, recalled that her ‘madam’ truly went to Plateau State for a conference last year butshe did not follow her. According to her, few days after returning home from the crusade, hosted by a popular man of God in Jos, her boss (Philomena) asked her to go that she was relocating to Abuja.“That was towards the end of 2017. I was at home when they went for the crusade. When madam came back from Jos, she asked me to go that they were relocating to Abuja and she would not go with me’.“I came to her house in 2015 July and I did not at any point steal even her one kobo before I left last year.

Maybe she was not referring to me, but I am sure she didn’t have any maid before and after me,” Dor, who now resides in Karu area of Nasarawa said when an insider directed us to her new residence’.When this reporter stormed Philomena’s family house in High Level, Makurdi on Saturday to confirm if it was Dor, who actually turned to a snake, a man we met there said she had since relocated.“Madam Philo no dey live here again,” he said rudely.

Meanwhile, when DAILYPOST reached Fabian O.Okoro, JAMB’s director of Information and Technology, for an update Monday morning, he did not reply our text at the time of this report.

JAMB bans pens, watches at 2018 UTME

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), organiser of the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), has banned the use of wrist watches and pens during the conduct of its 2018 test.

The board’s Registrar, Prof. Is’haq Oloyede disclosed this to newsmen on the sideline of the sensitisation workshop for Computer Based Test (CBT) centre owners on Wednesday in Lagos.

According to him, the workshop was to appraise the registration and conduct of the 2017 examination.“What we are doing here today is to appraise the registration and conduct of our past examination and we have taken some lessons from our experience.“To this end therefore we have introduced some measures that will further add to the integrity of the registration process as well as the conduct of the examination proper.

“For instance, we discovered during the conduct of the last examination that some electronic devices such as pens, wristwatches and other devices were used to perpetrate examination malpractice.“So, for next year, we have banned the use of wristwatches and pens by candidates and other persons in the examination hall.“We are also going to introduce some detection devices to ensure that those who plan to cheat in the examination hall are frustrated, as we will also jam (communication network) of the centres,” he said.

Oloyede noted that the sale of the registration document for the 2018 UTME would commence before the end of November.
