Netflix Reports That The Irishman Was Watched By 26 Million People In 7 Days

According to Netflix, their massive hit film, created by Martin Scorsese, was viewed by 26.4 million households in just one week. The number includes individuals who got 70% through the 3 and a half-hour-long film.

Netflix typically doesn’t release its viewership numbers for films and television shows, and they aren’t conducted by third party organizations either. Regardless, this past week, the data collection firm, Nielsen, reported that The Irishman had 13.2 million viewers in its first five days just in the United States.

Approximately one in 5 viewers watched the movie in its entirety during the first day of its release on the 27th of November claims Nielsen. If the data is correct, it means Netflix’s The Irishman was easily one of the most-watched films up for an Oscar this year.

Created for $160 million, the movie was screened exclusively in theater for three weeks, however, the biggest theaters commonly avoid showing movies that don’t follow the traditional time-line. Netflix hasn’t revealed box-office receipts.

This past Monday, The Irishman earned five Golden Globe nominations in addition to being named as the best movie of the year by the National Board of Review as well as the New York Film Critics Circle. The Irishman received two nominations from the Golden Globes including for drama and best film.

For the most part, The Irishman was received well by critics, especially for the performances of the cast, including Joe Pesci, Robert De Niro, and Al Pacino. However, not everybody liked the movie, as many on social media described it as boring and too long.

Fans of Scorsese know this is the first time Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci, and Martin Scorsese had worked together since 1996’s Casino. The actors and director have a longstanding relationship going all the way back to the 1970s.

However, Robert De Niro, undoubtedly, has starred in more films of Martin’s than any other actor. For The Irishman, specifically, Martin and Robert De Niro had to ask Poe Pesci a number of times to get him to star in the film.
