Harvey Weinstein Looked Decrepit At Recent Court Hearing – Here’s Why

Harvey Weinstein was in the Manhattan Supreme Court on Friday for a new bail hearing because prosecutors believe he has violated the conditions of his current bail agreement while he waits for trial. The disgraced Hollywood producer looked ashen as he struggled to walk, and he was only able to move with help from his defense team. Why did Weinstein look so decrepit?

According to The New York Post, the 67-year-old Weinstein suffers from severe Type 2 diabetes and a spine condition – plus other health problems – and the accused rapist’s health has “been in a free-fall” since his arrest in May 2018.

Because of his poor health, bail bondsman Ira Judelson allowed Weinstein to wear a modified two-part monitoring device while he is on bail instead of a regular ankle bracelet. The modified device is a slimmer bracelet with a separate signaling component.

“The one-piece device was problematic for his leg and medical issues,” Weinstein’s lawyer, Donna Rotunno, told the court.

However, the new two-piece device has been untraceable 56 times, says Assistant District Attorney Joan Illuzzi-Orbon. And she believes that’s because Weinstein hasn’t been staying within the required range, which is a violation of Weinstein’s bail conditions.

Now, the court is taking another look at Weinstein’s bail package because of the violations, and because New York has reformed its bail laws, which go into effect in 2020. Both prosecutors and Weinstein’s defense team were in court on Friday to make their arguments in front of Justice James Burke.

“The bottom line, judge, is this man could fly out on a private jet which he does and go to another country,” said Illuzzi-Orbon.

Weinstein’s attorney Donna Rotunno said that Weinstein never wilfully violated the terms of his bail, and she blamed the monitoring device being untraceable on numerous occasions on the lack of cell towers near Weinstein’s home in Bedford.

A ruling on the issue is expected on Wednesday.

Weinstein was arrested on May 25, 2018, and charged with “rape, criminal sex act, sex abuse, and sexual misconduct for incidents involving three separate women.” He is facing life in prison. On the same day of his arrest, he was released on $1 million cash bail. And, in addition to wearing the ankle monitor, Weinstein also had to give up his passport.

The prosecutors are asking the court to increase Harvey Weinstein’s bail to $5 million cash, $10 million insurance company bond, or $50 million security bond. He is scheduled to begin his trial on January 6th.
