Martin Scorsese Explains How He, Robert De Niro, and Joe Pesci Came Together Again For The Irishman

According to a report from The Hollywood Reporter, Martin Scorsese revealed at the New York Film Festival that he, Robert De Niro, and Joe Pesci always liked to compare notes on what they were currently working on, however, in the case of The Irishman, it took years for them to come together.

As it was previously reported, Robert De Niro spoke with Joe Pesci and convinced him to come out of retirement for a chance to work with Martin Scorsese again in his new film. Speaking with De Niro at the LA premiere of the Netflix film, the actor stated they’re all good friends and Joe “loves Marty.”

De Niro claims he told Joe, “come on, this is it, let’s do it, let’s try and do it,” and Pesci agreed and wanted to work with him once again in addition to Al Pacino. As fans of the iconic filmmaker know, the trio has worked together on three different occasions in the past, including Casino, Goodfellas, as well as Raging Bull.

The very first film secured an Oscar win for De Niro, and Goodfellas saw Pesci receive one as well. De Niro and Scorsese, on the other hand, have worked together in a plethora of films including The Audition, Cape Fear, The King Of Comedy, New York, New York, Taxi Driver, as well as Mean Streets.

While at the New York Film Festival, Scorsese recalled how he and Bob had been speaking about working as a trio together, and how they hadn’t done so since Casino. For years, they would look at each other’s work and try to come together, but it took a long time to finally make it happen.

As fans of movie culture know, Martin sparked the ire of many in the industry earlier this year when he condemned comic book movies as failing to demonstrate the classic qualities of “true cinema.” Following the backlash, Martin refused to apologize.

Additionally, some reporters and media journalists accused Martin of not employing enough female actresses, to which he responded by saying that he only hired them when the story called for it. If it doesn’t suit the story, then it’s a “waste of everybody’s time,” the director explained.

The Irishman, starring Joe Pesci, Pacino, and De Niro, revolves around the sudden disappearance of Jimmy Hoffa.
