Disney+ Launches With Glitches And Questions About What They Did To The Simpsons & Star Wars: Episode IV

Disney launched their highly-anticipated streaming service Disney+ on Tuesday, and it didn’t quite go as planned. The app crashed when many subscribers attempted to log-in, and those who did get a successful log-in were met with download errors when they pressed play for a movie or TV series. To make matters worse, fans of The Simpsons were extremely disappointed by the aspect ratio and odd cropping, and there was even a controversial new edit in Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope.

Fans all over the United States were ready for the launch, as many bought subscriptions well in advance of Tuesday and were patiently waiting for the app to be available on their devices. The Disney+ catalog includes more than 500 movies and 7,500 TV episodes, and the Mouse House gave fans a sneak peek at their content earlier this month with a three-hour long video that featured everything from Snow White to Avengers: Endgame.

But, when the App became available for download, many fans encountered problems with their log-in, and others couldn’t get the app to launch at all. My personal experience with the app – which magically showed up on my LG Smart TV without me having to download it – was an error message when I attempted to log-in, and it took hours before it would allow me to even get to the log-in screen.

When fans finally made their way to the platform, many encountered error messages when they pushed play on their selected content. And, social media started to light up with complaints.

“More like Disney Negative – amirite?” wrote one unhappy fan in the caption of a pic that showed an error message. Another subscriber wrote, “Hat tip to all those who experience a crash with Disney+ alongside me. Godspeed.”

When fans of The Simpsons tried to watch their favorite episode from the past 30 seasons, they immediately noticed that the platform was showing the cartoon in the 16:9 aspect ratio instead of 4:3. This gave the images a stretched out look along with parts cropped out to fit the widescreen format.

“Not only are the classic Simpsons episodes on Disney+ awkwardly cropped, but they’re stretched in a lot of places too. Bart’s head looks 4 inches wider here,” wrote a subscriber.

The streaming service also reignited the debate about who shot first in Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope, Han Solo or Greedo? In the original cut of the movie, Han shoots Greedo dead, but in the 20th anniversary version released in 1997, Greedo shoots first and Han shoots back in self-defense. Now, in the Disney+ version, the two characters pull the trigger at the exact same time.

Despite all of the unexpected problems, die-hard Disney fans were thrilled by the new platform and sang its praises on social media.

“Disney Plus — giving me more reasons to never leave my apartment or see other humans,” wrote one subscriber, while another added, “Forget Netflix and chill. Who tryna Disney+ and f–k?”

Many fans who grew up in the 1990s and early 2000s raved about classic Disney Channel content like Boy Meets World and Lizzie McGuire, and others loved the deleted scenes Disney+ added to Avengers: Endgame.

Disney+ is now available to fans in the United States, and it will continue to launch in countries all over the world in the coming weeks. The streaming service is available for $6.99 per month, and fans can check it out for free with a 7-day trial.
