Goalkeeper, Iker Casillas to retire from football after suffering a heart attack

Former Real Madrid and Spain lengendary goalkeeper, Iker Casillas has retired from football after he suffered a recent heart attack during training with his club FC Porto.

The Legendary goalkeeper was rushed to hospital during a training session, and was confirmed to have suffered a heart attack. Fortunately, he recovered and was ​discharged from hospital just a few days later.

Iker Casillas’ health scare has left him considering his future, and he has ultimately decided to retire at the age of 37.

Casillas told reporters: ‘I don’t know what my future holds but the most important thing is being here today. I’m feeling a lot better, I’ll be resting for a couple of weeks or even a couple of months.’

Casillas will announce his retirement after his sides final two matches, including a Portuguese Cup final against Sporting on Saturday May 25.

Casillas is widely regarded as one of world football’s greatest ever goalkeepers, having enjoyed great success on both the domestic and international stage. The Spaniard made his debut in the summer of 2000, and went on to make a record 167 appearances for his country, winning the European Championships in both 2008 and 2012, as well as the World Cup in 2010.

Casillas has also made 725 appearances for Spanish giants Real Madrid.
