According to several reports, well respected writer, playwright and poet Professor Akinwunmi Isola has died aged 78.
Prof Isola died in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital on Saturday, February 17, 2018 just a month before he was set to celebrate his 79th birthday in March 2018.
He was said to have been ill for about two years before he gave up the ghost. Confirming the death, popular filmmaker Tunde Kelani said: “Yes, Prof Isola died this morning in Ibadan. He has been down for about two years now.”
Famous for his books Madam Tinubu, O LE KU and Efunsetan Aniwura, Prof Isola was born in Ibadan in 1939. He attended Labode Methodist School and Wesley College also in Ibadan.
He studied at the University of Ibadan, earning a B.A. in French. He also earned an M.A. in Yoruba Literature from the University of Lagos in 1978 before commencing academic work as a lecturer at Obafemi Awolowo University where he was appointed a professor in 1991.
His works, Oleku, Koseegbe, Saworoide, Agogo Eewo and Campus Queen were all adapted to film by Tunde Kelani.
